Stuart Forth was born in Manistee, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in library science degrees from the University of Michigan in 1949 and 1950, respectively. In 1962, he was awarded a Ph.D. in American History by the University of Washington. Penn State's first library collection was housed in Old Main, moving to the Carnegie Library Building in 1904. Pattee Library opened by 1940 and the Paterno Library and renovated Pattee Library opened in 2000.
